Hi All, As the following post was directly inspired by the Foo Camp session on the future of the book (led by Allen Noren), I wanted to pass along the link that just went up at O'Reilly Radar: Rebooting the Book (One Apple iPad Tablet at a Time) http://bit.ly/zOoEu Excerpt: The book business is under assault. Book sales have been stagnating for some time, Amazon is the industry's boogeyman, and more terrifying, book publishers have no idea how to... [read more]

I was at Tish Shute's session on Augmented Reality (AR), and I was somehow feeling emotional (mostly anger). It wasn't directed at anyone or the session (Tish did a great job!). It was cuz I felt a big dissonance between AR as defined by the futurists, and AR as it is today. I tried to verbalize it here (http://allthingsv.com/2009/09/03/you-know-what-really-grinds-my-gears-augmented-reality/). I swore a lot to let it out, get it out... Pls feel f... [read more]

Mok Oh: Hey Adrian, Thanks for your words (and fixing the broken link)!
Tish Shute: Just saw this thread. I am just catching up! Thanks for the props Mok. And I am really glad that you care enough about the potential of AR to be emotional about its shortcomings in current early manifestations. Augmented Reality's first baby steps ou... [read more]

Jason Grigsby posted Werewolf Zach?

I've been looking through the attendee list to find all of the people I met this weekend and there is one conspicuous person missing. By conspicuous, I mean wolfy. Does anyone know Zach's last name and where he works? The guy who played werewolf late into the night. Wore a red shirt. Claimed to be the healer as a werewolf when Elan was actually the healer?

Zach Coelius: I hadn't created my account. Now I am here.
Zach Coelius: thanks for the love. It is always nice to be appreciated
Mok Oh: Theeeere you are, Zach!

Lenore Edman posted Feedback: Using Crowdvine at Foo

Thanks for providing Crowdvine for us. Here's my feedback: I really liked being able to figure out where the next session was without going to the board. I was surprised by how useful it was in communicating with folks with a sense of immediacy. A couple of times I used it to send an idea during a session so as not to lose it. I also appreciated being able to associate a face with a name ahead of time, and it was genuinely useful in making connec... [read more]

Adrian Freed: I was intrigued by the use of QS Codes to link the online and crowdvine virtuality and the physical reality. You could take it further: print codes on every time slot of the planning board and on the post-its. Use this to quickly synchronize changes.... [read more]

Sara Winge posted Foo Camp Lost & Found

Thanks for an amazing Foo Camp, y'all. A surprisingly small number of items were left behing. I've listed them below--just ping me if you see something that belongs to you, and we'll get it back where it belongs: plastic bag labeled "iPhone Tools" and filled with same; olive green canvas messenger bag, with red characters (Chinese? Japanese?) on the flap; black Belkin USB power adapter; black Linearity power adapter; O2 sim card

CrowdVine lets you export all of your mutual connections as a VCF file. That lets you add your new contacts into many email programs and social networks, including Gmail, LinkedIn, and Facebook. To export, go to My Network -> export contacts. Save the vcf file. In LinkedIn, you can find the import via VCF option under Contacts -> Add Connections -> Don't use webmail? or just follow this link: http://www.linkedin.com/uploadContacts?displayUploadCo... Steve Souders posted HUGE THANK YOU!!!

Thank you Tim, Sara, and the Foo staff for an awesome weekend.

Lenore Edman: Thank you so much!

AnnMarie Thomas posted PK-12 Education chat?

I would love to find people who would like to talk about: PK-12 education, particularly the role that making and engineering can play in it, and how to help teachers who often have little to no training in either.

Christine Walker: I'm very excited about this session. I am working on getting more making and tech in to my kids education and there's not much of a system in place for it K-6. Looking for ideas-
Elisabeth Robson: Sounds like a great session AnnMarie! I was also thinking of presenting on a similar topic.
Scott Berkun: For anyone else at the session: The research Nat mentioned about the study in New Zealand: John Hattie, AsTTLe. Book = Visible Learning, http://bit.ly/19EG69

Hi Everyone, I am currently sneaking a few minutes of Internet time here in Belize to let everyone know that I am flying back to California today after a week's honeymoon: I get back in late on Saturday night. As such, I will be at Foo on Sunday morning. I hope you all have a wonderful first day, and I look forward to seeing you on the Sunday! Jono

Kathy Sierra posted Bestsellers... improving the odds

I'm having a tough time understanding why so many would prefer to view the success of books and so many other products as simply... luck. Or Who You Know. Or How Much Your Publisher Promoted It. We can't control it all (especially on highly speculative topics or products), but we can still GREATLY improve the chances of making--and promoting (with no budget)--products that users really want. The lessons, models, and evidence are all there and oft... [read more]

Allen Noren posted Next generation publishing

At O'Reilly we spend a fair amount of time working on next generation publishing. At this time our efforts have largely been around digitizing our books into Safari Books Online and converting them to multiple formats (pdf, mobi, epub). But that's just a start. What's the next generation book in a networked world? Please don't say it's just the inclusion of audio and video content.

Allen Noren: Nic, sounds like Safari Books Online 6.0.
Mark Sigal: I am very interested in the concept of how books in the digital realm get excerpted/extended/accessorized. By that I am mean, 100s of people read the same book. Wouldn't it be great to be a click step away from being able to access all of the posts, ... [read more]

I have been working on what is the same and what is different about the last global financial crisis and its economic consequences and today's version. I propose to hold a session on this subject, which will bear a certain resemblance to my exercise last year on "Why Financial Economics is not a Branch of Physics."

In these early days of A.R. we're mostly seeing the interaction patterns of "pop-up info" (layar, etc), "mirrors" (webcam + tracker), "boardgames" and soon "avatars" (virtual pets). But what about rich interpersonal interactions in a "chat" or "tele-immersion" pattern? Lets talk about social AR patterns which invite creativity - and brainstorm ideas for applications.

Mark Sigal: Can you clarify what you mean when you say rich interpersonal interactions in a "chat" or "tele-immersion" pattern? AR is a topic of great interest, and I am also looking at lot at the concept of application overlays (e.g., games within games, games ... [read more]

Somewhere between the realm of Personal and Shared media lies the realm of the Universal. The realm of the universal is the Library of the Commons, a global repository of user-generated and crowd-sourced media and information (think: Yelp, YouTube, Wikipedia, Flickr, Twitter tweets, Bit.ly items, Scribd docs, etc.). What I am really interested in is looking at how such media might be federated into a listing/indexing/playback model (think: dewey ... [read more]

Everyone funds everything. A session on crowd-source funding as mix of art and science. The benefits and (very early) best practices. And then see where the convo goes from there. What areas does crowdfunding work best (or is it agnostic)? Any limits? How can it function as a decision-making engine? and more.

Zoe Keating: this topic has come up a lot recently. i know musicians, filmmakers & journalists who are crowdfunding (or trying to) their projects. i'm in

I'm thinking about organizing a session about creating simple explanations. I plan to talk just a bit about the lessons we've learned from making Common Craft "in Plain English" videos and then apply the lessons to the professions of a few people in the room. I'll need a couple of volunteers who have professions that are difficult to explain. Hopefully, with everyone's help, we'll find ways to frame them so that Moms, relatives, friends can under... There seems to be at least a bit of interest in what's happening in Washington, DC-- and a lot of DC types heading to FOO. Would love to hear from people on what they're looking to hear about. P.S. Come visit!

Sharon Cordesse: Would love to attend this session. I'm interested in hearing about if anything is changing with Federal contacting. I'd love to see more authentic small businesses have the opportunity to provide products and services to the government.

James Turner posted Any Hackintosh Folks Out There?

Are there enough of us breaking the Apple EULA to make a meet and greet / show and tell worthwhile? I'll be bringing my Mini-9 running 10.5.

James Turner: I'll have my brand new Dell 10v running 10.5.8 (which I'm using to leave this comment with from 36,000 feet over New York State, ain't technology grand?)
David Recordon: I've never made a Hackintosh, but would definitely be interested in learning about doing so.
James Turner: Sounds like there's enough interest to put it up on the board!

Steve Souders posted session idea(s): hacking the Web

Two hacking talk ideas: 1. browsers - add-ons, extensions, Greasemonkey, Jetpack/Ubiquity, bookmarklets - What works and what doesn't? Is it too limiting that this is limited to browsers? What about mobile? What about cross-browser? 2. hacking Google Analytics - people show me how they've leveraged Google Analytics to do things beyond what GA advertises. What stories do you have? What would you like to do?

In our "obsessions about Japanese obsessions" session, Joi Ito and I want to provide some examples of recent Japanese obsessions (gadgets, figurines, anime, design), tie them back to their historical origins, and talk about why there's such an obsession with it in the US and beyond. Anyone interested?

Joi Ito: We'll do a bit of show and tell and some theorizing. Let us know if you have anything you'd like to share or anything you'd like to learn more about.
Adrian Freed: I am interested in the Japanese enthusiasm for certain musical instruments, Ukulele and Charango of course but I learned recently an academy bought the entire final production run of Ondes Martenot.
Lee LeFever: Yes, I'm interested in this one. My wife (Sachi) is half-Japanese and we've spent a little time in Japan. I'm always fascinated by the Japanese obsessions.

Sean Hellfritsch posted anyone for monome?

any monome equipped folk attending? i'm thinking about bringing my 256... it surely would be fun to team up with others and make some music! -sean

Adrian Freed: I will try remember to bring some piezoresistive fabric so you can look out how to add pressure sensitivity to your monome buttons: http://cnmat.berkeley.edu/user/adrian_freed/blog/2007/07/11/adding_pressure_sensitivity_monome_keys
Sean Hellfritsch: wow, i don't know how i've managed miss this upgrade for so long. i'm curious to know if/how you've interfaced this with existing patches... or even better, new patches!
Adrian Freed: Actually I don't have a monome: i just messed with the keypad arrays from the monome folk and Sparkfun. Usually the connections to the microcontroller (e.g. atmega arduino) are wrong for this. You have to have the sense line for the swith from the ar... [read more]

Tony Stubblebine posted Some notes on the schedule

After Foo Campers fill in the grid at the Friday night opening session, we'll load the schedule, and you'll be able to pull it up on your cell or laptop, rather than trudging downstairs. There are 14 time slots and 14 rooms, so conceivably almost two thirds of us could organize a session. There are usually lots of events that get organized outside of the official sessions like werewolf, whiskey tasting, poker, and pre/post gatherings. The calenda... [read more]
